Beijing, April 30 /Xin Hua/ — An official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China Lin Ziyan on Thursday criticized some Japanese politicians for their statement regarding the Chinese region of Taiwan, following the unsuccessful attempt by the head of the Taiwan administration Lai Ching-te to visit Eswatini.
According to SMI reports, a group of Japanese politicians convened a parliamentary session and planned to present a statement to the Japanese government after the trip of the separatist-minded Lai Chinde in Eswatini, which remains the only so-called “diplomatic ally” of Taiwan in Africa, was canceled due to several African countries refusing his plane passage through their airspace. The statement by Japanese politicians indicates that the diplomatic independence of any state should not be undermined by any coercion, and also contains a requirement for the Japanese government to play an active role in protecting a free environment for exchanges between the population of Taiwan and its “democratic partners.”
Answering the relevant question at a regular briefing for journalists, Lin Qian reminded that there is only one China in the world, Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory, and the one-China principle reflects the overall consensus of the international community.
As noted by the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, certain states, through practical actions, observe the principle of One China and oppose separatist activities aimed at achieving “Taiwan independence,” which fully corresponds to international law and the fundamental norms of international relations. The Chinese side highly values such an approach, Lin Xian emphasized.
According to the Chinese diplomat, the Japanese side necessarily recalls that in the joint China-Japan statement of 1972, it was clearly stated: “The Government of Japan recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China. The Government of the People’s Republic of China confirms that Taiwan is an inseparable part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China. The Government of Japan fully understands and respects this position of the Chinese government and firmly adheres to its position in accordance with Article 8 of the Potsdam Declaration.”
Lin Ziyan also reminded that the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between China and Japan, signed in 1978 and ratified by the legislative bodies of both countries, stipulates that the principles set forth in the Joint Sino-Japanese Statement must be strictly observed. Since the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, the Japanese government has repeatedly stated that the Taiwan issue is an internal affair of China.
“These are legal obligations that Japan must observe, and political promises that it must firmly adhere to,” said the official representative of the PRC Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Regarding issues related to the independence of foreign policy, democracy, and human rights, Lin Qian noted that many farsighted people in Japan are rethinking the country’s domestic and foreign policies, there are many discussions about “women as consolation,” forced labor, and other issues related to history, as well as about the rights of indigenous peoples and minorities in Japan.
“Some Japanese politicians either remain completely silent on these issues or pretend not to notice them, yet at the same time make irresponsible statements regarding the Chinese region of Taiwan. I think they are the only ones who know what their true intentions are,” added Lin Qian.
