Washington, April 29 /Xin Hua/ — US President Donald Trump has instructed his administration to prepare for a prolonged blockade of Iran amidst an ongoing ceasefire under conditions of protracted negotiations. This was reported on Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing US officials.
At a meeting held on Monday at the White House with senior security service officials, D. Trump decided to continue exerting pressure on Iran’s economy and its oil exports through the blockade of Iranian ports.
According to the president’s assessment, continuation of the blockade carries less risk than other options — resumption of bombings or withdrawal from the conflict, — reported WSJ citing an official.
They told the newspaper that D. Trump is not ready to give up his demand that Iran at least commit to suspending uranium enrichment for 20 years and agreed to limitations after the expiration of this period.
According to reports, D. Trump told his aides that Iran’s proposal to resume shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and postpone negotiations on the nuclear program proved that Tehran was conducting negotiations in bad faith.
White House Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated that the United States has achieved its military objectives in Iran and “thanks to the successful blockade of Iranian ports, the US holds the greatest influence over the regime” in the negotiation process aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. –0–
