Chita /Russia/, April 27 /Xinhua/ — The Trans-Baikal Grain Terminal (ZGT) acts as a flagship project of the New Silk Road grain corridor (NSGC) Russia-China and hopes to increase grain supplies to China. This was stated in an interview on Wednesday by the general director of ZGT, Andrey Orlov.
“Our terminal is a unique infrastructure facility, the first combined grain railway terminal in Russia and Eurasia,” he emphasized, “which allows solving the problem of gauge differences between the railways of Russia and China.”
According to A. Orlov, the capacity of the transshipment terminal allows exporting up to 8 million tons of grain to China per year, which accounts for almost 80% of the total agro-surplus of the Siberian and Far Eastern regions.
Answering the question of what the NSZK Russia-China represents, A. Orlov clarified that this is a program aimed at the development and strengthening of trade and economic relations between the two countries in the sphere of exporting Russian grain to China.
“The operator of the program is the NSZK Group of Companies, where our terminal is located. It becomes the first stage of a large-scale logistics cluster in Transbaikalia, next to which a container terminal and a transport and logistics center will be built,” said A. Orlov.
The general director drew attention to the colossal track infrastructure of the terminal: five tracks with Russian gauge — 1520 mm and five tracks with Chinese gauge — 1435 mm.
“We can send finished trains with grain on both tracks, but the most advantageous for Russia is to deliver grain deep into China in Chinese grain wagons on the 1435 mm gauge. This reduces logistics costs and forms an attractive price for Russian grain on the Chinese market,” noted the interlocutor of Xinhua.
A. Orlov added that when using Chinese wagons, transportation times are reduced by almost two times compared to containers, and delivery volumes also increase.
According to him, the ZZT was created to increase supply volumes, grow trade turnover, and strengthen friendship and economic cooperation between Russia and China. –0–
