The XXXIII Russian National Congress “Man and Medicine” took place in Moscow — the main annual interdisciplinary event in the world of medicine, uniting science, education, and clinical practice. This year, among the laureates of the prestigious competition for young scientists is a representative of the medical institute RUDN, assistant of the Department of General Medical Practice Zalaar Ivanov.
At the junction of therapy and microbiology
The congress is traditionally held under the aegis of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and gathers doctors-clinicians, scientists, pharmacologists, healthcare administrators, and representatives of the pharmaceutical community at its venue. The program includes not only scientific symposiums and sections on specific nosologies but also a large-scale exhibition of medicinal products and IT solutions for medicine.
Within the framework of the competition for the specialty “Therapy and general medical practice (family medicine)”, the jury highly appreciated the reportFor the account of Ivanov, based on his dissertation work “Disruption of intestinal microbiota in urolithiasis.”
Microbiota as the key to early diagnosis
Urolithiasis (UL) is a systemic chronic disease affecting up to 20% of the population. In conditions of increasing incidence, the issue concerns not only treatment but also early risk forecasting.
A study by a young RUDN scientist statistically proved for the first time: the composition of the gut microbiota in patients with IBD significantly differs from the microbiota of healthy people. Symptoms of dysbiosis in such patients are noticeably more pronounced. Zarya Ivanova managed to identify specific bacterial markers that can serve as risk factors even before establishing a clinical diagnosis. In particular, an increase in the number of Peptostreptococcus anaerobius and a decrease in Clostridium propionicum in the gut may signal a predisposition to the development of IBD.Moreover, the analysis of the microflora can indicate the probable chemical composition of future stones (oxalate or urate), which paves the way for differentiated therapy.
Jury opinion and practical significance
The competition jury particularly emphasized that the work opens new horizons in personalized prevention of urolithiasis, especially in young patients. Experts focused attention on the fact that the detection and correction of intestinal dysbiosis should become an everyday task for the attending physician.
“I participated in an event of such scale for the first time. The congress was held at the Carlton hotel right in the center of Moscow. I managed not only to present my work but also to attend the most interesting sessions, and most importantly — to meet talented young doctors and scientists with whom we can build professional connections in the future,” —By Ar Ivanov.
At the event
The “Man and Medicine” Congress has been running its history since 1992. Created by analogy with international medical forums, it became the originator of many specialized Russian congresses (cardiologists, oncologists, gastroenterologists, and others). However, the main feature of “Man and Medicine” remains unchanged: it is a unique multidisciplinary platform where doctors of various profiles meet for a powerful synergy of experience, considering diseases comprehensively, at the junction of specialties.
Congratulations to Zala on her well-deserved victory and we wish her further scientific success!
