Minsk, April 24 /Xin Hua/ — International humanitarian cooperation, including on the Chernobyl issue, should be above politics. This was stated on Friday by Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Igor Sekreta during the international scientific and technical conference “40 years after Chernobyl: results.” Corresponding information was published by the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the same day.

I. Sekreta noted that after four decades since the Chernobyl NPP accident, it can be concluded that the elimination of the consequences of radiation accidents is a task not taken solely by individual states, but by the entire international community. In this regard, he expressed the opinion that all aspects of international life have today become hostage to politicization.

“This trend, unfortunately, did not bypass the topic of Chernobyl. The Chernobyl dossier became one of the most cynical examples of how politicization blocks the resolution of specific issues. It restricts access to technical assistance, destroys established connections, trust, and genuinely takes away strength from those who truly need help. Politicization in general negatively affects the development of affected regions,” I. Sekreta noted.

According to him, in order for the Chernobyl issue not to become a hostage to geopolitical disagreements and politicization, new rules of international communication are needed, under which international law would be outside politics.
