At the Northern State Medical University in Arkhangelsk, a scientific and practical conference “Formation of the regional vector of IT in medicine: educational and scientific track” was held.

The event brought together more than 230 participants — leading experts, scientists, and young specialists from various regions of Russia — and set new guidelines for the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare and medical education. The conference was organized by the Northern State Medical University in collaboration with RUDN.

Plenary session: from theory to practice

The conference work began with a plenary session, at which greetings from the university leadership and partners were voiced. Acting rector of SGMUNadezhda Aleksandrovna Bylovanoted that in the future artificial intelligence will cease to be a topic of discussion at conferences and will become a habitual part of life.

Head of the project office “Aerodynamics” of the Government Commission of the Russian Federation, senior lecturer at the Department of Applied Artificial Intelligence of RUDNLyudmila Olegovna Gontaremphasized the relevance of AI development at the intersection of theory and practical tasks:

“It is important to develop specific areas in the field of applied AI, to delve into AI topics not only from the point of view of some theoretical developments, but in the area of applied tasks that we can implement by executing federal and regional projects, especially those related to healthcare. All these activities we will be able to carry out through joint efforts,” —Lyudmila Gontar.

Key reports of the session covered a wide range of topics: prospects for cooperation between SGMW and RUDN in the field of AI application in medical science and practice, modern educational programs on AI at the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence of our university, best practices for the development of AI directions, as well as innovations in video analytics for medicine.

On the second day of the conference, participants discussed the features of interaction within the framework of the federal project “North — South,” the creation of joint educational programs, and the determination of priority areas of cooperation.

Youth track: RUDN students are among the best

A bright conclusion to the event was the youth track “AI in Medicine: from the first MVP to the use of neural networks.” Young specialists from SGMA and RUDN, experts, and trainers participated in the track.

A delegation departed from RUDN to Archangelsk, including first-year students of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence, as well as the deputy dean for academic affairs.Lali Vladislavovna Chebulanova, head of the Department of Applied Artificial IntelligencePavel Mikhailovich Podolkoand senior lecturerLyudmila Olegovna Gontar. The instructors held master classes for the trainees. RUDN students worked as part of an interdisciplinary team together with medical students from SGMA, which provided deep expertise in the subject area. The results exceeded expectations.

Project “Discover” — 1st place

The “Discover” project team took first place by presenting an innovative neural network for predicting the toxicity of chemical substances. The development allows assessing the safety of compounds even before the stage of laboratory synthesis, which significantly speeds up and reduces the cost of the process of creating new drugs.

Team roster: Oblova A.K., Simongauz E.I., Evtodienko A.Yu., Fomin M.M.

Coach:Chernitskaya Elizaveta, specialist at FII RUDN.

The expert jury especially noted the innovative component of the project, as well as the high effectiveness of interdisciplinary interaction between specialists in the fields of information technology and medicine.

Project “MedFlow” — reached the final

The MedFlow team successfully reached the finals with their project of an intelligent medical assistant. The system is designed for automated analysis of medical documents and help in understanding complex clinical cases.

Team composition:Pavlov A.I., Kadachigov D.S., Myasnikov E.D.

Coach:Klyukin Alexander, assistant of the Department of Applied II RUDN.

The project received a high rating from the expert jury. Medical students provided the team with valuable recommendations for improving the user interface and expanding the expert knowledge base for further implementation of the product in clinical practice.

Master classes and practical training

Within the framework of the youth trackLyudmila Olegovna GontarAnd the team coaches conducted master classes for students in two relevant areas. The first area is the creation of the “Smart Forest” system — an integrated system based on technical vision and unmanned aviation for the prevention, monitoring, and operational elimination of forest fires. The second is methods of protecting large language models in industrial application conditions.

The final chord of the conference was a joint master class by RUDN and SGU on AI, held within the framework of the elective course “Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence.”

The participation of RUDN students in the IT festival and conference was held withinGrant of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of RussiaOn the training of top specialists in the field of artificial intelligence with the support of X5 Tech company. Project activities and participation in the competition not only allow testing developments in real conditions, but also contribute to the fulfillment of the strategic task of training specialists in AI for the technological sovereignty of Russia.

During the trip, participants gained unique experience in the public defense of scientific and technical solutions before the expert community of IT specialists and doctors. Interdisciplinary teamwork skills were successfully developed, and the feedback received became the foundation for further improvement of the architecture of the presented neural networks. The victory of the freshmen team clearly confirms the high effectiveness of the system for early involvement of RUDN students in real project activities, allowing them to successfully compete at a professional level already at the initial stages of training.

Results and prospects

The conference not only laid the foundation for long-term partnerships between universities, scientific exchange, and training of new generation personnel, but also became another step towards the establishment of the Arctic Resource Center for Big Data Processing in Medicine. The center will be one of the key directions for the development of the scientific and technological laboratories of the world-class student campus “Arctic Star.”

The cooperation between RUDN and SGMU in the field of artificial intelligence is moving to a new level, combining the efforts of the capital’s scientific school and regional practice to solve the pressing problems of Russian healthcare.
