Hangzhou, April 23 /Xin Hua/ — “The exhibition evoked many memories in me. Russian painting has always been distinguished by its fundamental style. Through each painting, one can learn the author’s own ideas,” shared 33-year-old Chinese artist Wu Guanyu after visiting the exhibition of works by teachers and students of the Ilya Repin Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts at the Chuzhou Art Museum in the city of Hangzhou /administrative center of Zhejiang Province, Eastern China/.
The young man himself was a student of the aforementioned renowned Russian academy of arts. The exhibition, which officially opened on Wednesday and will run until May 10, 2026, features more than 200 selected works by teachers and students of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts named after Ilya Repin, created over approximately the last 20 years. Among the authors of the paintings are such famous Russian artists as Vladimir Pesikov, Alexander Bystrov, and Yuri Kalyuta.
The main part of the exhibits consists of oil paintings. In addition, the collection also includes engravings and architectural graphics.
“The painting depicting two women demonstrating diverse female beauty left a particularly deep impression on me,” said 25-year-old exhibition visitor Lu Tsin. According to her, the exhibition allowed her to get acquainted with Russian culture and broaden her artistic horizons.
The event will take place within the framework of the Cross Years of Education between China and Russia in 2026-2027. Its organizers are jointly the Chinese Academy of Arts, based in Hangzhou, and the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition, the rector of the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg Academy of Painting, Semen Mikhailovsky, noted that in the academy, beautiful artists from China once studied back in the 1950s. Currently, students from more than 40 countries around the world, including China, come to the academy.
“And now we are here, and we show that we continue these traditions,” he said. “We are confident that our cooperation has a wonderful future.”
According to the rector of the Chinese Academy of Arts Yu Xiun, Russian masters of art had a huge influence on China. Ilya Repin and his masterpiece “Barge Haulers on the Volga” are known to almost everyone in China.
“The holding of the current exhibition is not only a testament to the deep friendship between the two leading academies of arts of China and Russia, but also a practice of dialogue between two great art traditions into a new era,” said Yu Xun, expressing hope for further cooperation with the Russian Academy of Arts in implementing a large number of joint projects aimed at stimulating the development of art education.
