Phnom Penh, April 22 /Xinhua/ — The first meeting of the China-Cambodia strategic dialogue in the “2+2” format between the heads of the foreign policy and defense departments of the two countries took place on Wednesday in the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. The event was aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in various spheres.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC Wang Yi and Minister of Defense of the PRC Dun Qizhong chaired the meeting together with the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia Prak Sokhonn and the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense of Cambodia Tea Seiha.

The parties conducted an in-depth exchange of views and reached a broad consensus on issues such as bilateral relations, cooperation in the field of political and defense security, and the international and regional situation.

Van I indicated that China is ready, together with Cambodia, to transform this mechanism into a strategic platform for enhancing cooperation in the field of political and defense security, as well as an important instrument of mutual support, cohesion, and cooperation, in order to contribute anew to building the China-Cambodia community of shared destiny.

The Chinese side supports the implementation of the agreements between Cambodia and Thailand reached at the tripartite meeting in the city of Wuyishan, Yunnan Province/Southwestern China, with the participation of China, Cambodia, and Thailand, the effective use of existing bilateral mechanisms, the activation of dialogue, the restoration of mutual trust and normalization of relations, emphasized the head of the MFA of the PRC.

He stated that China is ready to provide a platform for more comprehensive and effective communication between Cambodia and Thailand.

According to Van Yi, China will continue to support Cambodia in accelerating its development and the rise and steady improvement of people’s welfare, as well as being ready to provide humanitarian support on issues such as the resettlement of residents in Cambodia’s border areas, and to promote joint exemplary projects to combat poverty.

The Chinese side intends to deepen cooperation with the Cambodian side within the framework of the four global initiatives put forward by China, to build an Asian security model based on collective security, the search for common ground while reserving differences, dialogue and consultation, to contribute to the development of a global governance system in a more just and reasonable direction, added the head of the Chinese foreign policy department.

Dun Czuon, in turn, stated that China is ready to jointly deepen and strengthen mutual trust in the field of military security with Cambodia.

Prak Sokhon, in turn, noted that China is Cambodia’s most reliable friend, and expressed gratitude for the comprehensive support from China.

He emphasized that Cambodia firmly adheres to the One China principle and resolutely supports all efforts of the PRC to achieve national reunification.

Tea Sei said that Cambodia is ready to actively develop new ways of cooperation and contribute to even greater progress in Cambodia-China relations.

Participants of the meeting agreed to deepen cooperation in the field of law enforcement and defense activities, jointly combat online gambling and telecommunication fraud, and ensure cybersecurity for each of the countries.

They emphasized that they support the resolution of regional disputes through dialogue and negotiations, jointly opposing one-sided bullying and the politics of force, defending global free trade and international honesty and justice. –0–
