Urumqi, April 23 /Xin Hua/ — Eleven people were handed over to judicial authorities in connection with an incident on a suspension bridge that occurred on August 6, 2025, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region /XUAR, Northwest China/, according to a report on the investigation of this incident published by the XUAR people’s government on Thursday.
Let us remind you that the incident occurred in one of the picturesque districts of Chzaosu County, Ili-Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, PRC, when one of the supporting cables of the bridge broke, causing the bridge deck to tilt and a total of 29 people to fall off it. As a result, 5 people died and 24 were injured, with the direct economic damage estimated at 20.32 million yuan (about 2.96 million USD).
According to the results of the investigation, the incident was classified as a more serious occurrence related to a violation of production safety requirements. It arose due to non-compliance with relevant laws and rules and the improper fulfillment of official duties by several parties, including the Committee for the Management of the Scenic District, the operator of the scenic district, and the contractor responsible for the bridge repair, as well as the local party committee, government, and relevant agencies.
After the accident, the Office of the Committee for Production Safety under the KN Council, together with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the KN and the State Department of Forestry and Steppe Economy of the KN, created a joint working group to oversee the work on eliminating the consequences and investigating the causes of the incident.
Currently, 11 figures involved in the incident have been handed over to the judicial authorities for investigation and prosecution. Five employees of the respective enterprises and 22 civil servants have been subjected to party disciplinary and administrative penalties.
In addition, five production and economic entities were fined or otherwise held accountable in accordance with laws and regulations.
