Co-chairs of the Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance are holding consultations with UN member states and stakeholders as part of the preparations for their first meeting, which will take place in July in Geneva at the sidelines of the annual “AI for Good” summit. They told journalists about this on Tuesday in Geneva.
It is expected that discussions will be structured around thematic directions, including the possibilities and consequences of using artificial intelligence, as well as the problem of digital inequality.
UN member states established the Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance, adopting it in August of last yearappropriate resolution. The Dialogue is conceived as the first universal platform for discussing key challenges and opportunities related to the development of artificial intelligence. The initiative’s co-chairpersons are the Permanent Representative of Salvador to the UN, Egriselda López, and the Permanent Representative of Estonia to the UN, Rein Tammsaar.
The dialogue, as told to journalists by the group leaders, should unite existing international initiatives and best practices in the field of artificial intelligence. Its goal is not to duplicate ongoing processes but to complement and enhance them, increasing the effectiveness of global cooperation.
Key themes of the initiative are security and human rights. Although human rights are considered a “cross-cutting” issue, many participants advocate for highlighting this theme as a separate direction.
Special Envoy for Digital and New Technologies Amandip Gill noted that the Global Dialogue is part of a broader strategy for the use of artificial intelligence in the interest of all humanity. According to him, the platform will allow accelerating the exchange of knowledge and experience under conditions of rapid technological development.
The special envoy also reported that the Independent International Scientific Group on Artificial Intelligence will present its first report at the meeting in Geneva. This mechanism was created in parallel with the Global Dialogue and is intended to provide a scientific basis for discussions and decision-making.
At the same time, as Gil noted, the capabilities of countries to use AI to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and effectively regulate it remain extremely uneven, which requires additional efforts to reduce the digital divide.
Answering journalists’ questions, Lopez clarified that the mandate of the Global Dialogue does not extend to military aspects of AI use. He emphasized that the main task is to create an open, comprehensive platform for discussing policy and regulation.
