Beijing, April 22 /Xin Hua/ — The Office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management of the PRC on Tuesday organized a collective expert assessment in connection with the recent rains in the southwest and south of the country. Measures for possible flooding and other negative consequences, work on liquidation, and assistance to the affected were discussed, the ministry reported.

The amount of precipitation in some areas of the provinces of Hunan, Guizhou, and Zhejiang has recently reached a maximum compared to the same period in previous years. A new wave of extensive and intense rains began on April 20, and, as expected, another wave will hit southern China starting April 26.

Frequent precipitation leads to soil saturation with water and an increased risk of landslides and geological disasters.

Experts called for activating measures for monitoring, forecasting, and early warning, using a set of methods to improve the accuracy of short-term forecasts, expand the early warning notification system, and ensure that alerts promptly reach cities, villages, and households.

Priority attention in this regard, as noted, should be given to institutions for the elderly, construction sites, and tourist facilities.

In addition, it was emphasized that it is necessary to take measures to ensure the safety of water reservoirs, dams, and key river infrastructure, to ensure the readiness of resources necessary for emergency response and providing assistance to victims. -0-
