Saint Petersburg, April 21 /Sinyua/ — Iceberg A23A, whose fate scientists have been observing for 40 years, has broken into small pieces, losing 99% of its area. This was reported on Tuesday by the press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in Saint Petersburg.
Iceberg A23a broke off from the outer edge of the Filchner shelf glacier in 1986. At the time of its formation, its area was 4170 sq. km, which is almost twice the size of Saint Petersburg.
As of last year, A23 was still the largest iceberg in the world, but in September 2025 it lost this status. Now its area is less than 50 sq. km, it continues to drift and break apart. –0–
