Beijing, April 20 /Xinhua/ — A local tsunami caused by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 near the eastern coast of the Japanese island of Honshu on Monday will not affect the coastline of China. This was reported by the Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the PRC.

Senior engineer of the Van Cuzunchen center in an interview to correspondent Sin Yua stated that a tsunami caused by an earthquake will not affect the coastal waters of China, nor will it cause catastrophic consequences in the distant sea area, including the outer part of the East China Sea.

Van Tszunchen advised Chinese citizens traveling or engaged in coastal activities in the Japanese prefecture of Iwate to observe local emergency protocols and for vessels carrying out transport or industrial activities in the corresponding waters to monitor information from the tsunami warning system in the Pacific Ocean region.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 occurred at 15:52, its epicenter located at coordinates 39.85 degrees north latitude and 143.1 degrees east longitude, with the hypocenter at a depth of 10 km. After this, tsunami waves were observed along the Pacific coast of Japan’s Iwate and Aomori prefectures. –0–
