Specialists of the Ufa design institute “Rosneft” have developed a methodology for selecting casing pipes* for fields with high content of corrosion-active components. The actual economic effect of applying the innovation exceeded 3 million rubles per well.

Scientists analyzed more than 8,500 wells at 93 fields operated by the company “Bashneft-Dobycha” (part of “Rosneft”). Based on a comprehensive analysis of drilling and well operation experience, as well as laboratory studies, specialists determined how hydrogen sulfide affects casing pipes made of carbon and low-alloy steels.

A methodology for selecting pipes depending on the expected factors affecting the casing string was developed at the institute. The methodology includes determining geological data and the degree of corrosive exposure, calculating the equivalent stresses of the casing string, and creating a program for testing pipe samples.

Using this algorithm of actions, “Bashneft-Dobycha” forms casing columns individually for each well, selecting a pipe capable of resisting the predicted concentrations of hydrogen sulfide. The new approach allowed identifying wells where an expensive alloy casing pipe can be replaced with a pipe made of carbon and low-alloy steels while maintaining strength characteristics and operational safety. This makes it possible to optimize well construction costs by up to 40%.

Over the course of 5 years, “Bashneft-Dobycha” plans to drill 79 wells taking into account the new drilling standard. The total economic effect from the introduction of the innovation will amount to 475 million rubles.

*Casing pipes are installed in the well to reinforce its walls, prevent soil collapse, and isolate productive horizons.
