Senior lecturer at the Institute of Ecology of RUDN University Aleksandr Strokov was awarded the badge of honor “Excellent Nature Conservationist” by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia. On the occasion of this event, we had a conversation with Aleksandr Aleksandrovich about his professional path, scientific interests, and plans for the future.
The provision about the badge implies not just a work experience of more than 10 years, but also specific merits. What do you think, which of the projects you have implemented played a decisive role in the decision about your reward?
I think the decision on the incentives was made based on the totality of the implemented environmental projects in which I participated. By the way, thanks to my native RUDN for the acquired ecological knowledge and no less to the native State Oceanographic Institute named after N.N. Zubov for the opportunity to work in the “field,” gain experience and hone my skills.
For me, what remains in memory is work in the North in the settlement of Amderma (Nenets Autonomous Okrug) in 2018, where I saw with my own eyes a real disaster associated with accumulated environmental damage (the territory of the settlement was littered with scrap metal, the land was contaminated with petroleum products and heavy metals).
Tell us more about your scientific interests and other important factors for ensuring the environmental safety of the project in recent years.
Among my scientific interests, I can highlight the standardization of anthropogenic impact on natural environments, in particular on water bodies, the study of the ecological state of water bodies from various perspectives. The most significant projects for me are the development of a system for the integrated use and protection of water bodies, including standards for permissible impact, as well as water body monitoring programs in various regions of our country. It was also interesting to gain experience in projects on the rehabilitation of water bodies and assessments of accumulated damage.
Looking back on your long professional path, tell me: have you managed to achieve the results you intended at the beginning of the journey?
In my opinion, only partially succeeded. The field of water issues is extensive, and I haven’t had enough time yet to participate fully in all its aspects.
And how has the natural disaster system changed during this time?
The natural disaster system is constantly changing, new regulations are introduced, you just have to keep up with everything, study and use it.
What goals do you set for the future?
First of all, I want to try to close the “white” spots in the field of water bodies, which I have encountered. Of course, it is necessary to thoroughly approach the expansion of the network monitoring water bodies within our huge country, find solutions, and legislatively approve a number of methods that today have only a recommendatory nature (for example, the calculation of diffuse pollution of water bodies). And, of course, I will continue to pass on my knowledge to students, share with them specific experience and examples from life so that they are inspired and armed with this knowledge to further solve environmental problems.
Congratulations to Alexander Alexandrovich on the well-deserved award and we wish him further success in his professional activities!
