This week, the Zaporizhzhia NPP twice lost external power supply, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on Friday.
“Repeated outages of external power supply once again emphasize the vulnerability of the IAEA in the context of the ongoing conflict and the escalating risks to nuclear safety,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
“Both Ukraine and the Russian Federation continue to constructively interact with the IAEA within the framework of negotiations on a temporary ceasefire, in order to be able to start repair work to restore the main external power supply line as soon as conditions permit,” he added. The “Dneprovskaya” line has been disconnected since March 24, 2026.
On Thursday evening, the Zaporizhzhia NPP in unit 14 has been without external power supply since February 2022. The backup 330-kilovolt LEP “Ferrosplavnaya-1” was temporarily disconnected, and emergency diesel generators provided the electricity.
Two days before this, the same backup line was turned off for about 90 minutes, during which the station also relied on emergency diesel generators to maintain nuclear safety functions.
“The repeated inevitability of using emergency diesel generators emphasizes how unstable the situation remains,” Grossi said.
The MAGATE team at the station continues to monitor the situation and awaits the results of the investigation.
