At midnight Beirut time, a 10-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon came into effect. This pause in hostilities followed weeks of intense confrontation. Simultaneously, on Friday, Iran announced the resumption of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The UN Secretary-General welcomed the agreements reached and called on all parties to observe them inviolably, expressing hope that the ceasefire would pave the way for further negotiation process.
UN calls for full implementation of the agreement
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk also appealed to the conflict participants with a call to comply with the terms of the ceasefire agreement.
He emphasized that current main efforts must be focused on finding a sustainable political solution that will eliminate the root causes of the conflict and ensure long-term protection of the civilian population.
This appeal was made after many weeks of violence, destruction, and a mass exodus of refugees.
UNICEF: children need protection and stability
The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) also welcomed the ceasefire in Lebanon, calling it a critically important opportunity to ensure the safety of children.
According to available data, at least 172 children died in the conflict zone and 661 were injured. More than 415 thousand children were forced to leave their homes.
The UNHCR emphasizes that the ceasefire regime must be observed inviolably. The parties must also comply with international law norms. Foundation representatives noted: children need more than just a pause in hostilities. To date, thousands of children cannot sleep in their own beds, go to school, and receive medical care.
Currently, UNHCR is coordinating work with the government of Lebanon and partners to support recovery efforts. The organization calls on the international community to provide emergency assistance to the population to ensure children have access to basic social services.
