Beijing, April 16 /Xinhua/ — Two Chinese parks have been granted the status of “UNESCO Global Geopark,” thus increasing the total number of UNESCO Global Geoparks in China to 51. This was announced on Wednesday by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration of the PRC.
The decision was made at the 224th session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris. The added sites were the Changshan Geopark in Zhejiang Province /Eastern China/ and the Siguniang Mountains Geopark /”Four Girls Mountains”/ in Sichuan Province /Southwest China/.
The Chanshan Geopark, covering an area of 1,043.1 square kilometers, is characterized by well-preserved stratigraphic sections from the Cambrian period to the Ordovician period and rich paleontological fossils.
The Siguniang Mountains geopark, covering an area of 2,764.01 sq. km, is located in the transitional zone between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Sichuan Basin. Here you can see complex fold structures, flysch deposits, extremely high mountains, and granite peaks.
Taking into account the aforementioned decision, China now has 51 global UNESCO geoparks located in 24 provinces, autonomous regions, centrally administered cities, and the Xiang’an Special Administrative District.
