At Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, the 60th International Mendeleev Olympiad in Chemistry (MMO-60) was opened. Participants were greeted by the Deputy Chairman of the Government of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko and the Chairman of the MMO-60 Organizing Committee, Rector of MSU academician Viktor Sadovnichiy.

“Symbolically, the 60th International Mendeleev Olympiad in Chemistry is held under the aegis of the Decade of Science and Technology, announced by our President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. This year, one of the most authoritative subject Olympiads in the world united participants from 35 countries. It serves as a springboard for young talents and involves them in the challenging yet fascinating science of chemistry. The chemical industry plays a crucial role in the economy. The sector is developing dynamically. For example, a national project ‘New Materials and Chemistry’ has been launched in our country,” noted Dmitry Chernyshenko.

He thanked the mentors and teachers for their support, wished the participants good luck, and also spoke about the existing scientific and educational prospects in the field of chemistry.

“Today, the Government of Russia is creating broad opportunities for scientists and researchers. In our country, within the framework of the national project ‘Youth and Children,’ there are 971 youth laboratories operating. Almost every 10th one is in the chemical field. With the support of the Russian Science Foundation, more than 700 research projects are being implemented in the field of chemistry and materials science. And about 70 of them are at Moscow State University,” added the Deputy Prime Minister.

Viktor Sadovnichy reported that over the past 25 years, the International Mendeleev Olympiad has significantly expanded its scope and influence worldwide. For instance, the number of participating countries has nearly quadrupled during this time. The 60th anniversary International Mendeleev Olympiad for schoolchildren in chemistry will be held at the Chemistry Faculty of Moscow University.

“The Olympiad will have the in-person participation of 165 school students from 35 countries, representing three continents. Representatives of two more countries — Japan and Hungary — will complete their tasks remotely. I would also like to note that winners and prize-winners of the International Mendeleev Olympiad for school students can enter leading Russian universities without exams. Dear Olympiad participants, I wish you a successful performance!” — stated Viktor Sadovnichiy.

A greeting to the organizers, participants, and guests of the Olympiad was also sent by the Minister of Education of the Russian Federation, Sergey Kravtsov.

“It is important that Russia, possessing the richest scientific tradition associated with the names of Mikhail Lomonosov and Dmitri Mendeleev, once again becomes a platform for such a large-scale international dialogue among talented school students. Holding the Olympiad in Moscow is not only a recognition of the high level of Russian education, but also an opportunity for open exchange of ideas, experience, and scientific inspiration. Science knows no borders, and the pursuit of knowledge and discoveries is a universal value that unites people regardless of language, culture, or geography.””I am sure that for many of you, participation in the Olympiad will be an important step on the path to great scientific achievements,” noted Sergey Kravtsov.
