According to a new study by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), conducted jointly with the Thünen Institute of Forestry, about 42 million people were employed in the global forestry sector in 2022, which represents approximately 1.2 percent of total employment. This is 3.1 percent less compared to 2011.

The study for the first time includes global data broken down by gender: women occupy about 10.6 million jobs, which accounts for 25 percent of all employment in the sector. At the same time, the gender gap remains most pronounced in Europe, while in Africa, America, and Asia it is less noticeable.

“For the development of a forest sector resilient to crises, it is important to understand who works in it, and the key role here is played by data broken down by gender,” noted the Director of the Forestry Department of FAO in China, Wu Qimin.

The main part of jobs in the forestry sector is concentrated in the production of wood and wood products (about 58 percent), as well as in the pulp and paper industry.

The new study is based on data from 182 countries, covering 99 percent of the world’s forest resources, and is part of the FAO global forest resources assessment project. The new model used by the authors of the report allows for annual and more accurate estimates of employment, taking into account the socio-economic and demographic indicators of countries.
