Cotonou, April 14 /Xin Hua/ — Romuald Wadagni won the presidential election in Benin, garnering 94.05 percent of the votes. This is evidenced by the preliminary results published on Monday by the National Autonomous Electoral Commission of the country.

A total of more than 7.89 million voters are registered in Benin, with a turnout of 58.75 percent. According to the results, 49-year-old R. Badanyi, the incumbent Minister of Economy and Finance and supported by the ruling coalition, outpaced the opposition candidate Paul Unkpé from the party “Forces Kauri for a Reviving Benin.”

R. Vadanyi’s running mate in the election race, Mariam Talata, will take the post of vice president.

In the course of the election campaign, R. Vadanyi promised to develop reforms of the last decade and to strive for a transition to a modern economy oriented towards industrialization, digitalization, and regional integration. He stated that the focus will shift from scaling up the economy to achieving higher quality growth.

According to politicians, representatives of electoral bodies and observers, the voting process was calm and organized. It is expected that the Constitutional Court of Benin will announce the final results within five days. According to the electoral code, the president and vice-president are elected by direct universal suffrage for a seven-year term.

D. Vadiani previously worked at Deloitte, and after Patrice Talon’s election as president in 2016, he moved to public service. Since then, he has held the position of Minister of Economy and Finance. In 2021, D. Vadiani was reappointed to this position, playing a key role in the implementation of P. Talon’s economic policy. –0–
