At the Engineering and Construction Institute of SPbPU, the first cohort of the educational course “Building Materials”, implemented on the national platform “Open Education”, has been completed. The course was developed by the faculty of the Higher School of Industrial, Civil, and Road Construction at ISI: Professor Natalya Chernysheva, Senior Lecturer Svetlana Belyaeva, and Assistant Vera Babochkina in collaboration with the Open Education Center of SPbPU.

In the first training batch, 275 people have already completed the training. Currently, 160 people are mastering the new course. The start of the next enrollment is planned for September 2026.

During the training, students learn about the nomenclature and physico-mechanical properties of building materials, technologies and production, and raw materials, about methods for determining the properties of materials and their rational application, as well as about the rules of storage and transportation. The course program provides the opportunity to learn how to correctly assess the quality of raw materials and competently select materials, focusing on the operating conditions.

Training includes a lecture part in which students learn about the classification of building materials, their properties, curing features, production technologies, as well as become acquainted with the basics of concrete mix design.

A distinctive feature of the educational program is the conducting of practical and laboratory sessions. In the practical part, students study samples of natural construction materials, their classification and application areas, as well as master methods for assessing the aggressiveness of the aquatic environment and forecasting the corrosion resistance of concrete. The laboratory block includes familiarization with testing methods, operational characteristics of equipment, regulatory documentation, and principles for determining the physical and mechanical properties of construction materials.

The course “Building Materials” is based on more than a century-old scientific and pedagogical traditions of the Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University of Peter the Great, laid down back in the 1920s. The course allows students to master the fundamental basics of materials science and at the same time get acquainted with modern building materials, their properties, production technologies, and quality assessment methods in accordance with current industry requirements.,” — noted Svetlana Belyaeva.
