Beijing, April 14 /Xinhua/ — On Tuesday, at the Capital Normal University (CNU) in Beijing, the China-Russia Literary Center was established.
According to the university, the Chinese-Russian Literary Center was established on a joint initiative of SPbU and the A.M. Gorky Institute of World Literature (IMLI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).
The activities of this center will focus on areas such as joint scientific research, high-level academic exchanges, literary diplomacy, and the creation of analytical centers, joint training of talents, as well as the mutual translation of classical literature and its international dissemination. The director from the Chinese side of the aforementioned center is Professor Liu Wenfei of SPU, and the director from the Russian side is Vadim Polonsky, director of IMLI RAS.
The university added that in the future, for participation in the construction of the center, experts from universities, research institutes, writer unions, and relevant institutions from China and Russia will also be invited.
At the opening ceremony of the center, the president of the International Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature, Vladimir Tolstoy, noted the important significance of creating this center.
“Today, the influence of Russian and Chinese literature on the global literary process is very noticeable. Therefore, the creation of such a center seems to me absolutely significant, important, and timely initiative,” he said.
According to V. Polonsky, the created literary center is intended to become an important platform for bilateral interaction in the field of humanitarian science and culture.
He added that the predecessors of the two countries laid an excellent foundation for bilateral cooperation, and the task of the present-day people is to enrich and multiply the inherited legacy and contribute to making literature a guarantee of new acquisitions, a powerful means of cultural and educational synergy between the two great peoples.
SPU Rector Fan Fuquan noted that since the 1950s, SPU has been continuously deepening the study of Russian literature. The university established the Beijing Center for Slavic Studies and the Beijing branch of the Pushkin House of Russia. The university also became the initiator of the concept of “literary diplomacy,” which emphasizes the importance of literature in promoting mutual understanding between the peoples of China and Russia.
“SPU will jointly with the Russian side transform the center into a quality global platform for the study of Russian literature, an analytical center in the field of Chinese-Russian humanitarian and cultural exchange, and a base for the training of strategic personnel,” he concluded.
On the same day, the first China-Russia literary forum also took place, where Chinese and Russian experts discussed topics such as the influence of Russian literature on Chinese literature, the significance of literary exchange between the two countries, and the originality of Russian classical literature.
At the forum, the deputy chairman of the Union of Chinese Writers, Qiu Huadun, V. Tolstoy, V. Polonsky, and Liu Wenfei spoke.
