Budapest, April 13 /Xinhua/ — The opposition party of Hungary “Tisa”, led by Péter Márton, has won over the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, securing a majority in the parliamentary elections held on Sunday. This was reported by the National Election Bureau.

According to the bureau, after counting 98.13% of the votes, the “Tisa” party received 53.62% of the votes and, according to forecasts, will get 138 out of 199 seats in parliament, exceeding the two-thirds threshold. The ruling alliance “Fidesz-KDNP” under the leadership of V. Orban received 37.79% of the votes and, according to forecasts, will occupy 55 seats.

The remaining 6 seats will be taken by the right-wing radical party “Our Homeland,” which received 5.89% of the votes. Other parties failed to overcome the 5% threshold required to enter parliament.

Preliminary data show that turnout was about 77.8 percent of approximately 8.1 million eligible voters, which is a record high rate.

In social media, the President of Hungary, Tamás Schuijok, congratulated the “winning party and all candidates in the parliament.”

The victory of the right-wing party “Tisa” signifies a rapid end to the 16-year continuous rule of V. Orbán, who served as Hungary’s Prime Minister from 1998 to 2002 and has remained in power since 2010.

During the election campaign, the “Tisa” party paid special attention to the fight against corruption and institutional reforms, calling for the restoration of the rule of law and transparent governance. It also advocated for establishing relations with the EU and urged Hungarians to unite to build a sovereign, civic, modern, and European Hungary.

In accordance with the electoral legislation of Hungary, parliamentary elections are held every four years. The Hungarian Parliament has 199 seats, of which 106 are elected directly in single-member constituencies, and 93 are distributed among parties that have passed into parliament. –0–
