Beirut, April 13 /Xinhua/ — Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said on Sunday that Lebanon is making efforts to stop the ongoing war, emphasizing the indispensability of preserving national unity and restoring the state. This was reported by the National Information Agency of Lebanon.
N. Salam made this statement at a series of events dedicated to the anniversary of the beginning of the civil war in Lebanon on April 13, 1975.
He noted that the goal is not only to prevent a return to civil war, but also to build a just, strong, and united state for all.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of comprehensive implementation of the Taif Agreement, calling to correct any violations that contradict its letter and spirit.
The Taif Agreement, concluded in Saudi Arabia in 1989 and ratified later that year, ended the 15-year civil war in Lebanon and restored the authority of the Lebanese government in the south.
The Hezbollah movement entered into a conflict between the USA, Israel, and Iran on March 2, firing rockets from southern Lebanon towards Israel for the first time since the ceasefire on November 27, 2024, which prompted Israel to launch an intensified military operation targeting several areas across Lebanon.
On Wednesday, Iran and the USA agreed to a ceasefire. Israel stated that it would observe the truce but objected that the agreement does not extend to Lebanon. This claim was rejected by Iran and Pakistan acting as mediator.
As a result of Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon since March 2, 2055 people have died and 6588 have been injured, according to a statement from the Lebanon Ministry of Health’s Emergency Operations Center on Sunday. –0–
