Havana, April 12 /Sinyua/ — Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that dialogue with the United States is possible, but it will be difficult, given the decades of tension between the two countries.

In an NBC interview that aired on Sunday, the president stated that Cuba is ready to cooperate with Washington on issues such as migration, illegal drug trafficking, and security, but only on the basis of “respect and equality.”

M. Diaz-Canel expressed concern about recent U.S. rhetoric, criticizing U.S. sanctions and stating that they have worsened economic difficulties on the island, in particular causing a fuel shortage.

Denying claims that Cuba is on the brink of collapse, he acknowledged significant problems faced by the population.

Despite the painful tension, M. Diaz-Canel emphasized that Cuba remains open to the development of “civilized” and cooperation-based relations with the USA. –0–
