New York, April 10 /Xin Hua/ — The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the United States rose by 3.3 percent in March compared to the figure from one year ago against the backdrop of a sharp rise in energy prices, marking the most significant jump in inflation in almost two years. This is evidenced by data published on Friday by the American Bureau of Labor Statistics.

According to departmental data, in March the growth rates of the CPI, calculated over the past 12 months, exceeded the corresponding indicator for the 12-month period ending in February by almost a whole percentage point. In monthly terms, the cumulative growth of consumer prices amounted to 0.9 percent.

A sharp acceleration in the growth rates of the CPI was primarily caused by an increase in energy costs. The energy price index rose by 10.9% in March, which was facilitated by a 21.2% jump in gasoline prices, providing almost three quarters of the monthly increase in the overall price index for all goods and services.

Meanwhile, the baseline CPI, which does not take into account the volatile prices of food and energy for measuring core inflation, rose more moderately, increasing by 0.2% for the month and by 2.6% over the past 12 months.
