UN, April 9 /Xinhua/ — The United Nations (UN) strongly condemned the Israeli strikes on Lebanese territory, which led to significant casualties among the civilian population. This was stated on Wednesday by the deputy official representative of the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq.

“The UN firmly condemns the death of civilians,” said F. Hak at the daily briefing, adding that the UN continues to urge all parties to use diplomatic channels, cease hostilities, and once again commit to fully implementing Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006).

The ceasefire between the USA and Iran provided an opportunity to prevent new human casualties among the residents of Lebanon and Israel, noted F. Hak, calling on all interested parties to observe the ceasefire regime.

Since UN peacekeepers continue to be subjected to the effects of military actions, the UN once again strongly urges all parties to comply with their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and inviolability of UN personnel and property at all times, he added.

“We again emphasize that any attempts to intimidate or interfere with the performance of the mission /UN Interim Force in Lebanon/, provided for by the UN Security Council mandate, must be immediately stopped,” he said, referring to the detention on Tuesday of the UN peacekeeper by the Israel Defense Forces.

F. Hak emphasized that there is no military solution to the conflict. “Now is the time to continue negotiations with the aim of resolving remaining disagreements and achieving a lasting ceasefire and long-term settlement of the conflict.” — he summarized. –0–
