Moscow, April 8 /Xin Hua/ — Constructive contacts between the shores of the Taiwan Strait contribute to stability and security in this region. This was stated on Wednesday at a briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, responding to a question from correspondent Xin Hua about the significance of the visit of the Kuomintang party delegation headed by its chairman Eric Chu to the mainland part of China, which will take place from April 7 to 12.

“We believe that constructive contacts between the shores of the Taiwan Strait contribute to stability and security in this subregion,” the Russian diplomat said.

M. Zalama emphasized that the choice of the path to resolve the situation in the Taiwan Strait is an exclusively internal affair of China. “At the same time, we note that Beijing consistently declares the priority of peaceful reunification, which we, of course, welcome and sincerely hope that the matter will be resolved without harm to peace and stability in the region,” she added.

An official representative of the Russian foreign affairs department confirmed that Russia’s consistent principal position on the Taiwan issue is: /there is only one China in the world, the government of the PRC is the only legitimate government representing all of China, and Taiwan is an integral part of China/ remains unchanged.

“It is reflected in many political bilateral documents, including in the Treaty on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China, which was signed on July 16, 2001. Accordingly, this year we celebrate its 25th anniversary,” noted M. Zagarov. –0–
