On March 26, the VII Round Table “Modern Approaches and Methods of Research Work in Architecture” was held at the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The event brought together master’s and postgraduate students of the architectural faculty, who presented their innovative research. The key topics were the sustainable development of northern cities and the re-functionalization of industrial areas of Petersburg.
Revival of the North
Particular attention was paid by the participants to the development of the northern territories. A first-year master’s studentSvetlana BryukhanovaPresented the concept of tourist complexes in the Onega district of the Arkhangelsk region, where the town of Onega acts as a cultural-event center. Within the framework of the practical application of scientific provisions, a system of tourist and cultural centers of the Onega region is being developed. The subregional center “Gate to Pomorye” in Onega will become a key element of this system. Thus, Pomor heritage transforms into an active tourism system capable of stopping the degradation of unique settlements through connected routes.
The first-year master’s team consists ofSofya Galkina, Angelina Savitskaya, Aleksandr GrekovиDarya Tolstovapresented a project of a linear public framework along the embankment, capable of forming new points of attraction, which will allow increasing the attractiveness of the territory and creating a sustainable development model for Onega.
First-year master’s studentsValeria TrepyalinaиArina TisonovaIn their study, they focused on the image of “Onega of the future,” which will help attract personnel and resources to the project, make the existing environment more modern and comfortable, without destroying the way of life of the local population in the process.
ResearchAleksei MatveenkoMade an important contribution to the understanding of the development of the northern territories. The graduate student presented the results of the expedition in the Onega district, where he studied regional factors that influenced the formation of the architectural cultural centers of the White Sea region. The author paid special attention to the necessity of creating attractive public spaces that reflect local identity.
At the core of the concept for the development of tourist centers of the Kola Peninsula, presented by first-year master’s studentsSofya MalyshevaиElizaveta Pauk, easy creation of a single recreational route designed to unite the central part of Murmansk and the town of Kola. The main points of this route are two key tourist centers.
Graduate studentsVitaly KlecиArtyom Martynenkotalked about their research in the field of adaptive architecture of public buildings for northern cities.
New life of historically industrial territories
In the section on the refunctionalization of industrial zones, concepts for the transformation of such areas in St. Petersburg were presented, such as the Utkina Zavod, Malaya Ohta, and the territory of the Krasny Kirpichnik factory. The projects are aimed at creating innovative clusters, techno-parks, and modern public spaces with the introduction of environmental technologies.
Concepts for the development of territories in the Utkina Zavod area were prepared by first-year master’s studentsFyodor Surov, Maksim Kuznetsov, Ivan Belaits, Olga Umarova, Diana KuvarinaиAnna Kabanova. They proposed to turn this territory into a balanced urban space.
Master’s students of the first year worked on adding new functions to the territory of the Krasny Kirpich factory in Kolpino.Gasan Abasov, Amir Nurmiev, Ekaterina Oreshko, Alyona Fedorova, Darya Krakovich, Sofya KunavinaиEkaterina Nosova.Students proposed creating a technopark on the territory, including a waste recycling plant. The key idea of this proposal is the creation of a technological symbiosis of production, science, and the urban environment.
Concept for the development of the territories of the Minor Ozone for first-year master’s studentsKsenia Saifullina, Irina Gansior, Anastasia FyodorovaиTatyana Misol’dykoprovides for the redevelopment near the Ladozhsky railway station with the development of the existing logistics center and the creation of new public and commercial facilities.
Innovative approaches in architecture became a separate topic of discussion. Graduate studentVasilisa Maksimadzhipresented research on the application of biofilmic design in a rehabilitation center, and a graduate studentMikhail ZheltovA – on the integration into the process of designing the urban environment and artificial intelligence.
Complex decisions in the interests of the city
An important part of the round table was the discussion involving a representative of the Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture of Saint PetersburgArina Safronovaon issues of refunctionalization of industrial territories.
Arina Dmitrievna noted: “Unfortunately, the existing urban infrastructure is not ready for the introduction of large facilities of special engineering infrastructure, in particular, for handling solid communal waste. Architects are required to develop an updated environment that ensures the effective operation of such facilities. In addition, architectural and planning solutions are necessary to promote the humanization of these complexes in the eyes of citizens.””SPbGASU students are ready to successfully handle the given tasks and, in general, the renewal of the urban environment, for which I express sincere gratitude to the university professors.”
All submitted projects received expert evaluation and recommendations for further work. As a result of the round table, priority directions for scientific research at the architectural faculty were determined: development of northern territories, ecological design, and adaptation of industrial zones for modern urban functions.
