House of A.F. Losev, subordinate to the capital’sDepartment of Culture, the only public scientific library of philosophical orientation in Russia, as well as a museum, scientific, educational, and outreach center. The A.F. Losev House collaborates with the scientific community across the country and acts as the organizer of two international philosophical forums.
History of the Losev House
A.F. Losev’s house is located on Arbat, in the building where the outstanding Russian philosopher Alexey Fedorovich Losev (1893–1988) lived for half a century. Arbat and its surroundings can generally be called the center of philosophical thought and culture at the beginning of the 20th century. This can be read, for example, in the three-volume memoirs of Andrey Beliy.
In Margarita Morozova’s mansion on Smolensky Boulevard, the entire intellectual elite of Moscow gathered for the meetings of the Moscow Religious-Philosophical Society in memory of V. S. Solovyov. In the apartment of Nikolai Berdyaev on Bolshoy Vlasyevsky (and later on Merzlyakovsky) Lane, members of the Free Academy of Spiritual Culture gathered. Alexey Losev, since his student years (from 1911), was also a participant in these meetings until they were closed by the Bolsheviks who came to power.
With Delays and Study. How Literary Communities Live and Work in Moscow
The idea of creating a library of the history of Russian philosophy and culture in the house where Aleksey Losev lived for 50 years arose in the cultural and educational society “Losev Conversations” in April 1990. This idea was supported by the Moscow scientific community, since at that time there was not a single state museum or library in the capital related to Russian philosophy. The chairman of the “Losev Conversations” society, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Honored Professor of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation Azar Talo-Godi consecrated this house to science and enlightenment.
In December 2000, the library of the history of Russian philosophy and culture “House of A.F. Losev” was established; the official opening took place on September 23, 2004, on the birthday of Alexey Fedorovich. On October 18, the day of the Assembly of Moscow Saints and the name day of the philosopher, a former monk who passed away, the library was consecrated by Archpriest Valentin (Asmus), Archpriest Alexey (Baburin), Archpriest Alexander (Saltykov), and Abbot Guriy. In 2019, the A.F. Losev Museum was opened, and the library was renamed “House of A.F. Losev — scientific library and memorial museum.”
The main book collection of the library became the memorial book collection of Aleksey Losev and the Azya Tasso-Godi.
