The UN Security Council met today to discuss issues of UN partnership with one of the regional alliances – the Cooperation Council of the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. Considering the situation in the Middle East, at the meeting opened by Foreign Minister Bairein, who is presiding over the Security Council in April, the discussion primarily focused on security.

Threat to the region

“The Middle East stands on a dangerous edge,” stated Khaled Khiari, Assistant to the UN Secretary-General on the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region, in his speech.

He reminded that the UN Secretary-General condemned the military strikes on Iran, as well as Iran’s attacks on the Gulf countries and Jordan. “These actions are clear violations of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the affected countries,” he emphasized.

The UN representative also referred to the demand set out in resolution 2817 (2026) on the immediate cessation of all Iranian attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. “The Council condemned these attacks and they must be stopped immediately,” he said, adding that the Council’s cooperation with the Persian Gulf countries plays a “key role” in reducing tensions in the region.

“Attacks on energy and civil infrastructure are causing special concern,” the Assistant to the Secretary-General continued, while the disruption of navigation in the Persian Gulf and adjacent waters has led to global economic consequences.

“All parties must respect the freedom of navigation, which is a cornerstone of international maritime law,” he said, reminding that the Secretary-General appointed Jean Arno as his personal envoy on issues related to the Middle East crisis and its consequences. “The United Nations Organization remains committed to deepening partnership with the countries of the Persian Gulf,” he added.

“Countries of the Gulf strive for peace”

“Since February 28, the countries of the Gulf have been subjected to Iranian attacks using ballistic missiles and combat drones,” emphasized Jassim Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Cooperation Council for the Persian Gulf States.

He noted that the strikes targeted critical civilian infrastructure, including airports, oil facilities, residential and commercial areas, fuel depots, service facilities, and diplomatic missions. According to the speaker, these attacks resulted in casualties among civilians and military personnel, significant material damage, and pose a threat to the safety of local residents.

He also noted that the Council member countries strongly condemn “Iranian attacks, which constitute a blatant violation of state sovereignty,” as well as the principles of good-neighborly relations, international law, and the UN Charter.

“The states of the Persian Gulf do not seek war. They strive for peace, security, and stability, which all peoples deserve,” he emphasized, adding that the best way to overcome the crisis lies through dialogue and diplomacy.
