UN, April 2 /Xinhua/ — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday once again called on the USA and Israel to stop the war against Iran, and also appealed to Iran to cease strikes against neighboring countries.
“My message is clear. The United States and Israel have long overdue to stop the war, which brings enormous human suffering and entails destructive economic consequences. Iran should also stop attacks on its neighbors,” said A. Guterres in a conversation with journalists.
“The crisis in the Middle East is entering its second month,” he noted, adding that the scale of destruction, indiscriminate attacks, and strikes on civilians and civilian infrastructure continue to increase.
According to A. Guterres, the consequences of the conflict are already being felt everywhere. He warned that the world is on the brink of a more large-scale war that will cover the entire Middle East and will result in dramatic consequences for the entire planet.
The UN Secretary-General noted that diplomatic efforts are currently underway to seek a peaceful path that “deserves spaces and support to achieve success — being firmly rooted in international law, including the UN Charter.”
“Disputes should be resolved peacefully. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of all member states must be respected. Civilians and civilian infrastructure, including nuclear facilities, must be respected and protected. And freedom of navigation must be ensured,” said A. Guterres.
“We must find a peaceful way out,” he emphasized. According to him, “conflicts do not end by themselves. They end when leaders choose dialogue, not destruction.”
