In the state forestry of Guangshan in Ifeng County, Jiangxi Province, one can often see a not tall, slender woman who energetically walks through the dense forest. This is 62-year-old forest ranger Wu Chunzhu.
More than 3600 mu (15 mu = 1 hectare) of forest land, monitored by Wu Chunze, is included in the previously designated state-level Guanshan Nature Reserve. This area is rich in primeval forests and rare species of wildlife and plants. Besides routine responsibilities such as popularizing forest protection laws, identifying fire risks, curbing illegal logging, and monitoring forest pests, it is also tasked with combating poaching and the illegal collection of wild plants and animals.
Wu Zhunya was born in 1964 in a forest worker’s barrack. Her father was a forest worker. In 1994, she officially became a forester in the Guangshan forest. In 2014, Wu Zhunya retired, then returned to her previous job and continues to work with the forest to this day. “I have never left this forest all my life. Even during pregnancy, I walked up the mountains every day. When the children grew up, I took them along on patrols,” she says. Over 32 years, she has covered every corner of the forest economy, each year covering more than 8,000 kilometers on patrol.
When U Chunxia first started working as a forester, she was scared, but she never thought about retreating. The forest hides many dangers: in the depths of mountains and forests, wild boars, venomous snakes, wild bees are often encountered, and in addition, one can come across poachers.
Today, 62-year-old Wu Chunhua remains at the forefront of forest defense. During free time from patrolling, she breeds chickens, grows vegetables on the forest reserve territory, and during leisure hours, together with colleagues, practices Tai Chi gymnastics. Her life in this remote mountainous area is full of bright colors.
