In the state forestry of Guanshan in Ifeng County, Jiangxi Province, one can often see a not very tall slender woman who energetically walks through the dense forest. She is a 62-year-old female forester, Wu Chunzhu.
More than 3600 mu (15 mu = 1 hectare) of forest land, monitored by Wu Chzunxu, is included in the composition of the previously established Guan Shan state-level nature reserve. This area is rich in pristine forests, rare species of wildlife and plants. In addition to regular duties such as popularizing laws on forest protection, identifying fire risks, curbing illegal logging, and monitoring forest pests, it is also tasked with combating poaching and the illegal collection of wild plants and animals.
Wu Chunzhu was born in 1964 in a worker’s barracks in the forest area. Her father was a forest worker. In 1994, she officially became a forest ranger of the Guan Shan forest. In 2014, Wu Chunzhu retired, then returned to her previous job and continues to manage the old forest to this day. “I have never left this forest my entire life. Even during pregnancy, I used to patrol the mountains every day. When the children grew up, I took them with me on patrol,” she says. Over 32 years, she has patrolled every corner of the forestry area, covering over 8000 kilometers annually on patrol.
When U Chun Su just started working as a forester, she was scared, but she never thought about backing down. The forest harbors many dangers: in the depths of the mountains and forests, wild boars, poisonous snakes, wild bees are often encountered; moreover, there is the risk of running into poachers.
Today, 62-year-old Wu Chunhua remains at the forefront of forest defense. During free patrol time, she raises chickens, grows vegetables in the forest area, and during leisure hours, she practices Tai Chi gymnastics together with her colleagues. Her life in the remote mountainous area is full of vivid colors.
